Humane voters should be glad to hear that with the exception of of a few races, the work we did before the election and at the polls in June guarantees that where it was possible, we have animal friendly candidates going to Sacramento. It is still important to vote, but most of our candidates who are still in the race are in “safe” districts and will be elected if we will just vote. They do not need money at this point, they do not need work in their campaigns, but voters must get to the polls and vote. If this is your first time consulting the League of Humane Voters website for endorsements, be advised that in all likelihood you will be voting for a few statewide offices and one of our Assembly District or Senate District candidates. You are only able to vote for candidates that are running to represent your district, there being 78 Assembly Districts and 50 Senate Districts in California. Only the odd numbered Senate Districts are up for election on November 7th. We would also like to say that we have, in cooperation with PAW/PAC of northern California attempted to combine our recommendations with theirs. They have given us the honor of accepting our recommendations and so we have done the same for the most part with theirs. In addition, we have posted some recommendations for judges that come from Michael Bell. Michael has been a board member in the past and has always been supportive of our political activities. We have no reason to believe that these are not good recommendations, but it is not our research and therefore, we can not be responsible for their accuracy. Judges, important as they are, are very difficult to scrutinize in an election. In spite of the role they have come to represent on the US Supreme Court, they are supposed to be apolitical. They are supposed to be impartial, interpreting the law and acting wisely, rather than imposing a personal philosophy. One can understand their reluctance to show their sympathies to voters. Researching their behavior is very difficult. We do the best we can with the tools at our disposal. Although we are publishing these recommendations for votes who may vote by mail, we often make a few changes based on information that can surface right up to the day before the election. Please check our website before mailing in your ballot or going to the polls. We always read and respond to your questions, comments and criticisms, now be sure to do your duty as a citizen and vote. Every election is an opportunity to make our community and our state a little better for the animals. The Board of Directors |
