Appeal for Campaign Support for Christine Chavez,

45th District, California State Assembly 2006

An Appeal to the Animal Welfare Community from

the Animal Legislative Action Network (ALAN)

 last revised 21 May  2006

Please post, print, forward and respond to this appeal !

In June of this year, we will learn if those who care about animal related issues in California can be taken seriously as a political force.  A strong, young, activist woman with a “pedigree” for fighting for social justice will attempt to be elected to the California Sate Assembly.  She is currently under-funded, but has tremendous popular appeal.  Her name is Christine Chavez.

She is the granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, the vegetarian champion of better living and working conditions for California’s field workers.  Christine still fights for field workers rights, has demonstrated since childhood for farm workers rights and other social justice issues.

Compassion is in her blood.  She has always stood by the voiceless, and the helpless.

Christine loves animals.  She is being ridiculed by the political establishment because she has had the courage to create an Animal Platform (see her animal platform on our website, www.ALANpac.com ), issues that she believes are in the best interest of a people living in a civilized society.

As further background, please see this 1990 letter in support of animal rights, from Cesar Chavez.

The Animal Legislative Action Network (ALAN) has a long history of finding animal friendly candidates.  We were the first to endorse Paul Koretz, Jack O’Connell, John Burton, Gloria Romero and Tom Hayden, author of the Hayden Bill.  We have fought to elect Lloyd Levine, Gil Cedillo and Eric Garcetti.  But Paul, Jack, Gloria and Lloyd can not do it alone.  California is a huge state with 40 Senators and 80 members of the Assembly.

It is up to us to decide. Can we raise some money to place her where her voice and vote count?  Have we learned the importance of legislation like the Hayden Bill and the thousands of dog and cat lives saved as a result?  Can we envision how important it will be in the next four years to have one more compassionate legislator?  She will not win and the animals will lose a strong voice, if you will not help.

First we need money -- pennies, quarters or dollars.  Secondly, we need your time, an hour, a day or a week between now and June 2006.

It is that simple.  We work and we win -- else  we ignore this election, and who knows when another candidate will surface, brave enough to support our issues?

The 45th district is safe Democratic, so the primary election in June 2006 will determine if Christine is elected to the Assembly.  There are seven Democratic candidates splitting the vote and no incumbent running, so every vote counts, and volunteer help and donations prior to June 2006 will be critical in helping Christine to win.

You do not need to live in the 45th District to donate, but you must understand that political donations although powerful, are not deductible. You do not need to live in the 45th district to work in Christine’s campaign.  Activists are coming from as far away as Sacramento and San Francisco to help Christine.

The Animal Legislative Action Network (ALAN) would like to open a campaign office in the Silver Lake/Atwater District of Los Angeles for Christine.  It is an area vital to her success.  But, we need money to pay the rent, to pay for the phones.   And, we need animal people to volunteer their time to run the office, call voters and knock on doors.

We have opened a P.O. Box to accept donations and campaign correspondence:  All donations can be mailed to Animal Legislative Action Network, 2658 Griffith Park Blvd. #386 Los Angeles CA 90039.  Checks should be made out to Christine Chavez for Assembly.

We will alert you the moment we can afford to open our own campaign office.  ALAN is starting a calendar; e-mail us with your time commitments between now and June. Christine’s success will be measured by how many of you will be there this year for her and the animals.
